Proteins….what are they?

Proteins are a combination of amino acids bonded together to perform certain tasks inside the body; for example, strengthening bones and regulating hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. There are nine essential amino acids in the body. “Essential” meaning the body cannot produce them. Those aminos are Histidine, Isoleucine, Phenylalanine,
Methionine, Leucine, Threonine, Valine, Lysine, and Tryptophan.

If a protein source contains these amino acids it’s considered a COMPLETE protein.
Complete proteins include things like chicken, turkey, lean beef or fish. I like the idea
of a complete protein being something that basically walks, flys or swims. This is the easiest way to categorize the macro nutrient protein. Instead of shuffling through “soy only” proteins or all “egg” proteins, this allows a quick reassuring way to leave you with the best possible choices for your diet.

MYTH BUSTERS!

Carbohydrates play big roles in the human body concerning production and storage of energy/glucose. This is what the brain uses to power your body in strenuous activity.
Carbohydrates include: potatoes, rice, breads, fruit, pastas and some starchy vegetables.
Are carbohydrates essential nutrients for energy through ones daily life?….NO, here’s why…

There is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate. In fact, your body does not need a fast acting glucose to provide energy. Many people believe that you need carbohydrates to function properly. What they fail to see is that your body is a finely tuned machine and can switch energy sources to compensate for the lack of glucose. This process is called ketosis.

Ketosis is a physiological state attained when there is a lack of carbohydrate intake. While in ketosis ones body burns ketones instead of carbohydrates for an energy source. (Ketones are energy sources broken down from fatty acid bonds. AKA energy from fat.)

The two essential nutrients needed in the body are proteins and fatty acids.
(Think about art, for example the art of ancient times, as in the realistic Greek sculptures where the statues where incredibly lean and muscular.) In the past, there were no refined carbohydrates being manufactured. Therefore the people of older times ate mainly meats that they hunted, small berries and olive oil. Our ancestors grew strong, evolved, and lived lean from diets of mainly proteins and fatty acids.

America has been misinformed that the body NEEDS carbohydrates to live. This misconception is the catalyst for our obesity epidemic. Without an excess of carbohydrates, the body is in a stable blood sugar level while burning fat for its main fuel source.
